New paper – scavengers have favourite body parts

Our latest paper, Heads or tails: selective body part feeding by scavengers across species and season, is out in Royal Society Open Science.

We monitored 40 eastern grey kangaroo carcasses with camera traps in the Wolgan Valley, on the edge of the Greater Blue Mountains. Wedge-tailed eagles often went for the head and abdomen, dingoes favoured the tail, and both shifted towards the abdomen in the cool season. Red foxes changed their behaviour much less as carcasses decayed.
