Niraj Meisuria
Niraj Meisuria is a PhD researcher in the University of Sydney's Disease Ecology Lab, studying scavengers, carrion and how wildlife disease moves between wild and domestic animals.
I’m an ecologist interested in the parts of ecosystems most people would rather not look at: carcasses, and the animals that eat them.
My honours research in the Global Ecology Lab at the University of Sydney used camera traps on kangaroo carcasses across desert, forest and alpine Australia to show how bioregion and season govern wedge-tailed eagle scavenging. I graduated with First Class Honours and the University Medal in 2023.
My PhD, in the Disease Ecology Lab, asks how carrion shapes disease risk at the interface between wild and domestic animals, with fieldwork in Cape York, Queensland. I also write for general audiences about scavengers and biosecurity, including for The Conversation.
